We need help

to let CHILDREN learn

NEWS // Our THANKS to ....  NEWS// Total of 215 children at school....

 To the reader.

In 2006, on one of our vacations, we were in the inland country of Gambia, West Africa. We then visited the local school of the village Penyem.

There was not much more than one small farm village, the school, sand and high temperatures.

However, there were a lot of inquisitive children. If they were lucky, their parents were able to pay for the tuition fees. But they could not pay for materials and lunch. Even more terrible was the fact, that there was no water.

We found the lack of water most harrowing.

But the well there was dry, and nobody could do anything about it.

After 14 days, we returned to our own safe comfortable house with the conviction

 we had to do something.

- - -

Now, two and a half years and five working holidays later, we have been possible to connect the school to the water control of the village and to repair the well. It contains some water at the moment.

By the fact that there now is water, we finally had the possibility to lay out a kitchen garden together with the school children. We now can grow vegetables in it (surrounded with barbed wire and soon to be walled) for cooking lessons. With the time being the kitchen garden hopefully can provide a daily lunch for all children.

Every vacation we have taken along a lot of luggage such as materials for handiwork lessons, (knitting hooks, embroiders, sews) but also for woodworking lessons and the necessary materials for bicycle making lessons. A stock of pens, pencils and anything necessary for writing is now present.

- - -

At this moment, we are collecting materials together with family, friends and colleagues. We hope to be able to ship a full container by the end of may 2009 to Gambia. It is supposed to arrive during our vacation so that we can take the materials to the skill centre and the library and furnish them.

- - -

This centre is built by - and with - the villagers on a piece of land

they provided to us for this aim.

- - -

We are also trying to find sponsors in the Netherlands who want to pay the tuition fees for children. This way we try to help poor parents to let their children go to school. At this moment this has succeeded for 7 children. Two of these children worked in the kitchen garden during their school holiday in order to pay for their tuition fees themselves.

- - -

So far we have paid everything from own resources. The project is expanding and we now need help financing it.

- - -

Hence this letter. We need help to make our dreams come true in this developing country:
Good education for all children and as a result, a chance on a better future.
